August Burns Red – Barbarian

Chaos brings order.
Who will you allow to lead you blindly until the end?
You’re like a little girl with a stupid crush.
We all sing glory.
We all choke ourselves with our own ignorance.
There is so much more to life than your stupid desires.
Nothing is everything, and everything is something.
Confused? Troubled?
Finding the meaning is looking through the vivid transparencies.
Dance the night away because tomorrow,
we will look back and talk about good times now gone forever.
Trace lines around the image of your choice.
Dance until the end, my friend, and find joy in every living thing.
Optimism is not a choice, it’s a belief.

Pantera – Drag The Waters

A smack on the wrists is the words from the mouth
of the outsiders, lawyers, police
A small price to pay for the dope and the guns
and the rape, it should all be O.K.
Your father is rich, he’s the judge, he’s the man,
he’s the God that got your sentence reduced
But in the back of his mind, he well knows what
he’d find if he looked a little deeper in you – in you

Drag the waters some more
Like never before

Sweet is the slice and the lips – you’re gonna have that woman -
she is your favorite lay
Promised you (swore) that no one had been there,
and she was going to keep it that way
Let it move in, you got thin, and got high, and
your money went and so did your friends
But she’s by your side, and her smile cannot hide
the premonition of the beckoning end – the end

Drag the waters some more
Like never before

In with it, out with it

Wednesday Wreck-ommendation: Woods of Ypres

Now that my 12 hour shift and daughter’s birthday party is over (Happy 1st Birthday Emily Erin!!!) I now have a couple of minutes to post my Wednesday feature.

It’s no secret that Woods of Ypres is one of my favorite bands I’ve heard this year. Woods IV was amazing and their previous work is equally as good if not better! WoY are releasing Woods V early next year and both songs they have leaked are really good. David Gold’s vocal style is brilliant and the style of Ypres, which they call blackened doom, is one of the best things to happen to my ears in a long time. Woods of Ypres has changed my life for the better and not only did they inspire me to write some kick ass songs, they inspired me enough to start this very blog. I never heard of Woods of Ypres and I wanted to share the news with my friends and community of the lesser known bands.

Woods of Ypres widened my range of music even more and helped me appreciate music that is slower than the usual death metal/death core fast BPM stuff all of the time. Doom is a great genre and I think it’s one of the best. Woods‘ older material is also some amazing black metal. Sit back, relax and listen to some Woods of Ypres.

Qreview! Vildhjarta – Måsstaden

I dunno what the fuck a Måsstaden, Vildhjarta or a Thall is but one thing is for sure, this album packs one hell of a punch. Vildhjarta is a band that, just like most bands following this trend, sound like Meshugguh. The thing about Vildhjarta is, they actually seem to do it right. It’s not JUST about the chunky ass kicking riffs and time changes, they implement amazing leads and unique techniques within these monster riffs. Rhythm is one thing I love and rhythm is one thing Vildhjarta does perfectly; the songs are heavy, catchy and have a weird sense of electronic presence in them and it adds to the songs and makes them slightly more dynamic. Time and time again you will hear the amazing riffs of rhythmic goodness, electronic impulses that create an ominous effect and even scary little clean channel parts that create one hell of an atmosphere.

The vocals are a mix of two fellas. It reminds me of a death metal Mushroomhead in a way, one guy is more screamy and the other has a lower tone and is more death metal. The mix is great and keeps things interesting, there is even some clean singing on the song “Traces“. On the lower end of the sounds we get some fantastic bass guitar work and drumming that pummel you furiously and relentlessly. If you have an amazing set of speaker (headphones, home or car) then Måsstaden will be your best friend for weeks. The sound is so rich and fulfilling and I’ve never heard an album from within this genre that is as good as this one. Not one single track is boring and each song has something special, whether it’s just a small track with some killer riffs or it’s the outro to “All These Feelings”. I don’t know for sure how they are getting such a high sound out of the guitar but my only guess is that they are getting from behind the bridge that holds the strings.

While Måsstaden is truly the best in it’s class, it’s not truly groundbreaking. This style is over saturated but Vildhjarta  make it their own and make it unique, which I can appreciate. I honestly cannot stand this style of music but this album is my exception. Enjoy Vildhjarta , enjoy Måsstaden.

Pros: Excellent sound and songs. Interesting sounds and leads.

Cons: It’s that sound everyone loves/hates.

Listen to Woods of Ypres’ new track, “Kiss My Ashes (Good Bye)”

Blackened Doom titans from the north, Woods of Ypres, have a new album coming out on January 30th, 2012. The new album “Woods 5: Grey Skies & Electric Light” will be released through Earache Records and it’s already on of my most anticipated releases of early next year. the song Kiss My Ashes (Good Bye) is a return to that slow doom sound that graced my ears throughout the entire year this year. The guitar solo is out of this world, the riffs are catchy and the great “Whoa” chants are present. Kiss My Ashes (Good Bye) has me wanting MORE Ypres. Late January could not come any faster.

Korn – Falling Away From Me

Hey, I’m feeling tired.
My time, is gone today.
You flirt with suicide.
Sometimes, that’s ok.
Do what others say.
I’m here, standing hollow.
Falling away from me.
Falling away from me.
Day, is here fading.
That’s when, I would say.
I flirt with suicide.
Sometimes kill the pain.
I can always say.
‘It’s gonna be better tomorrow’.
Falling away from me.
Falling away from me.

Beating me down.
Beating me, beating me.
Down, down.
Into the ground.
Screaming some sound.
Beating me, beating me.
Down, down.
Into the ground.

(falling away from me).
It’s spinning round and round.
(falling away from me).
It’s lost and can’t be found.
(falling away from me).
It’s spinning round and round.
(falling away from me).
Slow it down.

Beating me down.
Beating me, beating me.
Down, down.
Into the ground.
Screaming some sound.
Beating me, beating me.
Down, down.
Into the ground.

Twisting me, they won’t go away.
So I pray, go away.

Life’s falling away from me.
It’s falling away from me.
Life’s falling away from me.
Fuck!

Beating me down.
Beating me, beating me.
Down, down.
Into the ground.
Screaming some sound.
Beating me, beating me.
Down, down.
Into the ground.

Qreview! As Hell Retreats – Volition

A metal core album that uses some death core elements to keep things on the heavy side and they are not afraid of using their clean channel. While they don’t reinvent the wheel, they keep things interesting using a unique tone and executing songs very well.

The album moves very well and keeps me interested. Some of these breakdowns on this album are just down right nasty and the songs can be emotional. Volition is a good album, The bass and guitar tone are the real stars of the show. Using techniques from so many different genres, it keeps the listener guessing.

The only thing bad about the album is probably the obvious use of so many metal core riffs and death core breakdowns. Still a solid and heavy album.

Pros: great riffs and guitar tone. Singing is good.

Cons: so many layers underneath the main core elements that you may miss it.

LATE AS FUCK FRETBOARD FRIDAY – MASTODON AND CATTLE DECAPITATION

Here are two videos from two bands I respect. The first video is a Mastodon running through their song Divinations off of their album Crack The Skye. This video is hilariously good because they nail the song even though the timing gets fucked up right after the solo. Here are the tabs for the song.

Next up is Josh Elmore from Cattle Decapitation playing some riffs from Regret and the Grave off of their latest album The Harvest Floor. Click here for the tabs and enjoy the video. (I could only find the Guitar Pro version, sorry)

Ben Savage and Phil Bozeman’s (Whitechapel) old band: PSYCHOTIC BEHAVIOR

(Ben Savage on the right, with the rolled up jeans and white Abercrombie shirt)

Catching a glimpse of an old photo featuring Phillybo on the guitar intrigued me and I began looking up this band he was in, Psychotic Behavior. It’s cool to see where and how these guys got started. Psychotic Behavior is an interesting band, something I would now ignore but it’s still cool to see this. It’s still good mid-2000′s metalcore. Just check it out for yourself.

You can check out some more songs on their Myspace profile. “PB Instramental” and “My Own” are good songs. The singer is really talented!
