That’s right, Korn’s legendary and legacy starting self titled album turns 18 years old today! With teenage angst lyrics, heavy tuned down 7 strings and a sing/scream method that was ahead of it’s time, this band pioneered an entire genre and took over the world by force. Korn spawned an entirely new genre that was often times copied but not with the style and grace that they had. They were truly masters of clicking with their fans and hooking them song after song, album after album and this one still do this day converts people across the globe. I can’t believe it’s been 18 years since this eerie looking album cover was sitting on store shelves, waiting for those who dared to pick it up and listen to it. It was a real experience and definitely different from the normal early 90′s style grunge that was ever so popular at the time. Korn’s debut album separated itself from that sound immediately and dominated the rest of the decade, becoming rock n roll’s best selling artist and impressing with a few multi-platinum selling records. You have this debut to thank for everything. They created what became the horrible/wonderful genre known as “Nu Metal”.
To this day, I still visit the fine songs of this album: Divine, Need To, Clown (I still love that intro), Predictable, Lies and well…all of them. It’s one hour and six minutes of pure joy. By joy I mean grief, drugs, abuse and weirdness….this album is definitely bad ass, unique and nostalgic. I’m glad it was an important part of my life and if it wasn’t for this album, I wouldn’t have developed a taste for exploring heavier music and opening up my mind to different styles. Korn’s debut album is perfect, the production is natural, the playing is raw and the songs are just merciless and mean. Crank this album today and celebrate 18 years of KORN!!!!!!!!!!!!
I still get chills to this day….there is a reason this album has sold more than 10 million albums.
