Leprous – Ihsahns band without Ihsahn still rules

leperous

Leprous, the Norwegian prog metal quintet, have released a new single titled “Chronic”.
The band, also known for being Ihsahns backing band, have a new album coming to North America on May 28th. The album “Coal” is the follow up to 2011′s “Bilateral”. The 7 minute epic has elements of exactly what you would expect of any Norwegian metal band, while incorporating skillful progressive musicianship that really deserves to be heard. Starting off with haunting keyboards, and driving rhythm section, this song really grabs your attention. The chorus is something almost reminiscent of a little poppier sounding Ihsahn riff. It’s kind of unnecessary to draw the comparison, but I hear what I hear. Black metal elements pop up here and there which I really enjoy. Progressive riffs throughout the middle section of this song with clean projected singing really carry you into the later parts with such skill and ease which put me in mind of a Norwegian black metal influenced Dream Theater.
This is a band that I think has been missing from my personal collection for way too long. After the first listen I had no choice but to immediately start it over. Dark and Epic while taking you on a musical journey, if this song is a good representation of the album to come, this will be a MUST HAVE for any progressive metal fan. I for one highly anticipate this album to drop. I expect to give this album a GREAT review once I finally get my hands on it.

HUNG Premiere New Song At Guitar World – “Progeny”

From Guitar World:

Here’s the exclusive debut of a new track by Hung, a New York City-based metal band whose sound is anchored by a 7-string guitar and electric violin, courtesy of Lyris Hung, formerly of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

The new song, “Progeny,” is from Hung’s self-titled debut album, which will be released May 8 via The End Records.

The song is among the band’s more sonically diverse pieces, traveling through many musical landscapes while still being concise and coherent. “It’s also one of our more challenging songs to perform live,” Lyris Hung says. “The nature of the song also led me to approach the violin lines in a more traditionally ‘violinistic’ way, allowing the instrument to take a lot of sweeping parts above the rest of the band and even the rhythm violin parts tend to be integrated with melody.”

Hung is heading out on an East Coast tour in May (dates TBA) and is hosting record-release party at Trash Bar 7:30 p.m. May 3 in Brooklyn, New York; $15 at the door includes free CD (signed upon request) and T-shirt.

For more about the band, the album, the tour and the release party, check out Hung’s Facebook page and official website.

Ohio Sucks: UNBODIED However Does Not. A New Kind Of Progressive Metal Has Come To Kick Your Ass!

Unbodied are a death/sludge/progressive band with a great vocals and interesting unorthodox music writing that all works together and produces a headbangers delight. It’s like Mastodon & Intronaut blended together with death metal vocals over it. While these bong smoke riffs are enough to keep you highly entertained, there is even more that appeases the ears. Guitarist Matt Tluchowski has a damn good clean vocal style as well. Bravo Unbodied, I’m a fan now. I’m really digging this EP they’ve put together, I see this band going places. So everyone check this band out and like em on Facebook!

Delicious Gore Grind: GENERAL SURGERY’S “A Collection of Depravation” Has 30 Tracks Of Bloody Goodness Just For You

A Collection of Depravation from General Surgery is quite the collection indeed. Displaying 30 gore-tastic grind tracks and drilling them into your brain through audio lobotomy. General Surgery is actually one of the few gore grind bands that absolutely do not annoy me. Sometimes within this genre you get the vocalist who thinks they are the fucking Tazmanian Devil and they ruin any hope of me taking them seriously. The vocals here are quite gnarly with many different styles including the ultra deep, ultra evil sounding low growl but it’s not done all of the time so it doesn’t get annoying. Musically it’s chaotic and bad ass, the riffs alone would start a mosh pit at a synagogue. This album is highly recommended and I think if you dig the semi-hilarious qualities of gore grind, you’ll love this adaptation of the genre. General Surgery does it right! Out now on Relapse Records.

The Great Jive (Featuring Michael Lessard of Last Chance To Reason) Is A Nice Change From The Norm

The Great Jive is a two man piece that play some pretty sweet electronic ambient music with some acoustic guitars and piano in the mix with Lessard’s panty dropping voice singing over it. The songs on their Facebook page are wonderful and even though this is just a side project that these two gentlemen do for fun, I feel like this could be a great success all in itself. I’m not even a big fan of this kind of music, but since I am a mega fan of Lessard and his work, I just genuinely enjoy The Great Jive. I hope you do as well. Be sure to like them on Facebook and watch the random shit they have posted on YouTube. Enjoy.

INANIMATE EXISTENCE – A Band You Should Listen To

Inanimate Existence, one of those bands you stumble across and they just fuckin blow you away. Really scary acoustic shit in between the massive technical death metal riffs and the band puts out a great sound. The second song I’ll post is a really good instrumental piece with incredible leads by Matt Sotelo I believe. I can’t wait to hear more from this band. They are definitely one of the better finds so far this year. Really tight writing and performance by the band. Straight forward and just heavy as hell. Inanimate Existence’s new album will be released July 17th through Unique Leader.

PERIPHERY Cover SLIPKNOT’S “Heretic Anthem” – Cover =/= Shit

I barely listen to Periphery but when I see a big ruckus about a band covering someone I use to jam on a daily basis…of course I’m going to check it out. The result is a legit cover, a homage to where we were a decade ago. Fueling hate into teens and making them scream “666″ and “fuck” more than most bands of that time who blew up near the Nü metal era. Periphery gives the song justice and it’s pretty damn good! Wear is my backpack and my driving permit? I have to get to my part time job and listen to Slipknot whilst doing so.

(I use to draw Slipknot’s “S” symbol on EVERYTHING in high school)

Don’t You Just Love Finding A New Band And They Kick Your Ass? UNSACRED Does Just That!

Blackened Hardcore? Never thought I would see those two words together. Never thought they would work so well together too! Unsacred, hailing from Virginia, produce an almost entirely new sound of metal. With the epic feel of black metal, the violent behavior of hardcore tempos, Unsacred mesh together a sound that is frighteningly good. The EP they have on their bandcamp is great and I fully enjoyed it from start to finish. The vocals are loud and obnoxious like a good hardcore/punk band, the riffs are superior and the drum work holds things down really tight. I love it when the band slows it down just a little bit and adds that third element to the party, sludge. This band nails 3 genres really well and blends them all together to produce something new, something great. Check them out on their bandcamp and their Facebook page! w/

CATTLE DECAPITATION: PERFORM NEW TRACKS LIVE? (Video)

I fucking love Cattle Decapitation. The video shows them opening up with a song that does not sound familiar to me at all, so my initial reaction is “OH BOY NEW SONG!!!!”. If I am wrong, continue to flame me in the comments section. Oh the video shows the band performing a new track then “A Body Farm” & what sounds to be another new track!

PAINFUL QUANDARY: A New Band With An Expert Sound

Hailing from Callaway, FL comes forth 4 young gents (Not Djents, fuck you) who bring us monstrous death metal. The tracks on their Facebook page are killer and there are more gems to find on YouTube. MetalSucks Premieres New Track! 7 HORNS 7 EYES – Divine Amnesty

Head on over to MetalSucks and listen to the track. Vince says “7 Horns 7 Eyes are cinematic, dramatic, intense, dark and moody — characteristics that aren’t necessarily that hard to find in metal — but the way these guys put all the pieces together is wholly unique and fresh.” and I would have to agree with him. This track sounds really fucking…..NEW. Blending the best part from a few genres and turning it into this massive beast of a track. I hope the entire album is as good as this!

AT THE GRAVES: Mysterious Doom, Unorthodox Sludge

At The Graves has posted up their latest album “Solar” on their bandcamp and it’s some damn good groovin’ sludge. Even slowing it down a bit here n there and adding a doom element to it. The music has a slight grunge feel to it as well, vocals are an aggressive attack and are organic. They don’t feel over processed and “Pro-Tooled”, they feel natural and the music production sounds pretty fucking good too. Again, not overly processed and computerized. Give At The Graves a listen to, you will enjoy what you hear. If you INSIST that I make a comparison I’d say ATG has an eerie sound like The Atlas Moth and a sludge tone similar to Torche. It’s good shit, go listen to it now.
