Leprous, the Norwegian prog metal quintet, have released a new single titled “Chronic”.
The band, also known for being Ihsahns backing band, have a new album coming to North America on May 28th. The album “Coal” is the follow up to 2011′s “Bilateral”. The 7 minute epic has elements of exactly what you would expect of any Norwegian metal band, while incorporating skillful progressive musicianship that really deserves to be heard. Starting off with haunting keyboards, and driving rhythm section, this song really grabs your attention. The chorus is something almost reminiscent of a little poppier sounding Ihsahn riff. It’s kind of unnecessary to draw the comparison, but I hear what I hear. Black metal elements pop up here and there which I really enjoy. Progressive riffs throughout the middle section of this song with clean projected singing really carry you into the later parts with such skill and ease which put me in mind of a Norwegian black metal influenced Dream Theater.
This is a band that I think has been missing from my personal collection for way too long. After the first listen I had no choice but to immediately start it over. Dark and Epic while taking you on a musical journey, if this song is a good representation of the album to come, this will be a MUST HAVE for any progressive metal fan. I for one highly anticipate this album to drop. I expect to give this album a GREAT review once I finally get my hands on it.
