Album Review: The Bunny The Bear – The Stomach For It

Funny thing about the title of The Bunny The Bear’s new album is you literally have to have the stomach for it. However, upon listening to this album….I was delighted to hear that there are some redeeming qualities about this band. The first time I heard their music, I was instantly turned off and never wanted to listen to them again. Then this was sent to me and I heard the single they released prior to this and it was catchy as hell. The clean singing just hooked me and it got stuck in my head. So I was interested in this album and wanted to see what else it had for me. The Bunny The Bear is a techno dance pop deathcore band….yeah. The music is horrendous really. Yet I get it, I understand it. I get what they are going for somehow. I mean after listening to Mindless Self Indulgence, The Browning and Iwrestledabearonce…I definitely can understand this style of music. The Stomach For It was a fun album to listen to, but I kept it on the down low….because it is embarrassing to listen to and I don’t want to explain to anybody who this is, what they are doing and justify why I sorta enjoy it. It’s goofy music really.

With that said, the album falls into this structure that doesn’t stop until it’s over. It’s definitely a Hot Topic hit, the electronic elements with the singing and riffs are great. I enjoy the clean vocals A LOT, they are the only true redeeming quality on the entire album. It’s a shame because the talent being used here really won’t get noticed because many many people will immediately label this as garbage and never listen to it. I honestly think the band would benefit from dropping the deathcore breakdown stuff and the harsh vocals. They just don’t fit, it’s forced and trendy as fuck.

Even though I really could care less about this album in general, I just found myself really enjoying it each time I listened to it. It’s poppy, catchy and seriously the clean vocals “Brought to you by Chris Hutka aka The Bear)” are absolutely incredible. The hooks and talent there is amazing!!! Songs like “This Isn’t Why You Made Her“, “Soul” and “Sheep” is where he truly shines and steals the show. Other than Chris’ talents, the album is “meh”. The Bunny’s (Matthew Tybor) harsh vocals ruin it really, it’s a shame really…if he toned it down a little bit or sang along this band could be taken more seriously (In my eyes, and probably many others). Repeat use of some electronic effects got annoying and overall the music was more electronic dance/pop based with a decent riff over it from time to time…not too bad but drop the harsh vocals and deathcore elements.

I enjoyed “The Stomach For It” honestly, it’s just something I won’t purposely play…ever. Maybe if Chris was the main vocalist and Matthew had some parts it would be better. I think The Bear should sing over the entire thing, his vocals are great. This band has potential, they just need to hone in and fix some things to come out with a solid, respectable album

Pros: Music is tolerable, The Bear’s clean vocals are soooo gooood.

Cons: Lose the deathcore breakdowns and harsh vocals
